My Home
1. Introduction: Animal Homes
Today our topic was My Home.First, I introduced to the children that different animals have different kinds of homes — a home is not always the same in shape or form, and not every home has windows or doors.
For example:
• Badgers dig many tunnels and chambers underground, forming a maze-like home. Inside, they lay down leaves and dry grass to make it comfortable.
• Spiders build webs — the webs they weave so carefully are their homes.
• Bats live in quiet caves where they are not disturbed.
• Arctic foxes have homes similar to badgers — underground tunnel systems — but because they live in cold areas, their burrows are lined with dry grass, feathers, and moss.
• Hermit crabs use seashells as their homes and carry them wherever they go.
• Owls live in deep and hidden tree holes that can protect their chicks very well.
• Beavers usually build their homes by rivers, ponds, or in the middle of lakes. Their homes look like little island houses made from wood, branches, and mud.
• Herons build their nests at the tops of trees using sticks and twigs.
Through these examples, the children learned that homes can come in many different shapes and forms.
2. Story Time: “Give Me Back My Clean Home”
Next, we read a story about protecting the ocean.
In the ocean lived an octopus named Blub. One day, a strange “visitor” came to her home — a plastic bottle! Later, more and more “visitors” arrived: plastic bags, plastic cups, and other rubbish.
A manta ray named Manti told her, “These aren’t fish. They’re garbage thrown into the ocean by humans.”
As time went by, the amount of rubbish grew, disturbing and harming the sea creatures. So Blub and Manti decided to push the garbage back to the shore.
However, the rubbish piled up on the beach, becoming a big problem for humans.
Then, a little boy stood up and said, “We need to clean up the rubbish and make our beach clean again!”
People began sorting the rubbish and cleaning up the shore. Finally, the beach became clean, the ocean returned to its original beauty, and the sea creatures could live happily once more.
Through this story, the children learned that protecting the environment means protecting the homes of all living beings.
3. Human Homes
After that, we talked about the different kinds of human homes.
There are many types of homes for people, such as bungalows, apartments, terraced houses, detached houses, farmhouses, caravans, canal boats, and igloos.
The children looked at pictures to learn about these different kinds of homes and practiced how to describe them in Chinese.
4. Game Time: Matching Rooms and Furniture
Then, we played a matching game.
I showed the children a floor plan of a house, and they had to match the correct furniture to the right rooms.
This activity helped them review Chinese vocabulary about rooms and furniture while practicing their listening skills.
5. Craft Time: Making “My Home”
Next, it was time for our craft activity — Designing My Own Home.
Materials: scissors, colored pens or pencils, and a sheet of A4 paper.
Steps:
1. Fold both sides of the paper toward the center to make two “doors.”
2. Draw two symmetrical diagonal lines on the top, then cut along the lines to create a triangle-shaped roof.
3. Open the paper, divide it into different rooms, and draw furniture to design your own home.
During this hands-on activity, the children used their creativity and reviewed the vocabulary they learned in class.
6. Homework
For homework, the children tell the story of Octopus Blub to your parents, using your own words.
