At the beginning of the lesson, we reviewed the body parts we learned from the last lesson. It’s amazing that they were all able to shout out the answers. Some children were able to recognize the Chinese characters when I presented the flashcards. Well done, boys and girls. As part of our speaking revision, they were able to tell everyone: ‘我是男孩子’ / ‘我是女孩子’ (I’m a boy/I’m a girl).

Today, we learned about our family topic. There are family members like dad (爸爸), mum (妈妈), older brother (哥哥), older sister (姐姐), younger sister (妹妹), younger brother (弟弟), grandpa (爷爷 / 姥爷), and grandma (奶奶 / 姥姥). Our children shared the family members they have, and they are learning to use the sentence: ‘I have __.’ For example, ‘我有妹妹’ (I have a younger sister). By learning this topic, we have also learned a new song called ‘我爱家人’ (I love my family) followed by some word wall games to practice.

During the writing part, we learned four Chinese characters: ‘爸’ (dad), ‘妈’ (mum), ‘哥’ (older brother), and ‘姐’ (older sister). It’s a little challenge for our children, but I’m proud they have tried so hard and have managed to do it. Don’t worry if your children are unable to write at this stage; the most important thing is the concept of Chinese characters and pencil-holding skills. These are the foundations for their more advanced writing and fine motor skills as they move up to the next level. I forgot to bring the writing sheets to the lesson today; therefore, I’ve attached the writing practice paper for them to use at home
