1. In this lesson, I led the children on a pretend trip to the supermarket and introduced them to the names of various foods. I brought a shopping bag filled with different food items and presented more than a dozen commonly used foods, including tomato, carrot, apple, noodles, bread, corn, mushroom, watermelon, strawberry, mango, tomato, egg, orange, banana, milk, and pear. My goal was to enhance their memory of Chinese vocabulary through hands-on demonstration.
2. In the PowerPoint, I designed a multiple-choice game where the children had to choose the correct food item to put into the shopping cart. I showed them three pictures and said the name of a food in Chinese to guide them to find the correct answer. For example, I would say: “Lucky is going to buy ‘xihongshi’ (tomato), which one is the correct answer? 1, 2, or 3?” I used a bilingual questioning approach to ensure every child could participate. Then, the child I invited to the front would find the real food item that matched the image from the real foods. By combining object demonstration with interaction, I aimed to spark their interest in learning Chinese. If they answered correctly, they could choose one food item from the selection to take home as a reward.
3. Game time: I prepared five sets of paper puzzles, all food-themed. I scrambled all the pieces and had the children work together to complete them. This activity encouraged teamwork while also developing their cognitive and fine motor skills.
4. Homework: Create a mini supermarket.
Materials: Scissors, used cardboard boxes, scrap paper, colored pens, double-sided tape.
Instructions: Use scissors to cut cardboard to appropriate sizes and divide the box into six small compartments. Draw the foods they’ve learned on scrap paper and place couple of them in each compartment. Use more paper to create play money, then use colored pens to give the supermarket a catchy name.
Game rules: Parents and children play together. One person plays the customer asking about prices, and the other plays the vendor selling the food. Finally, use the play money to make transactions. The game also involves simple addition, helping children apply math in real-life situations.
