Next, I introduced the Dragon Boat Festival to the children.
The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated once a year, usually in May or June. It commemorates the ancient poet Qu Yuan. People hold dragon boat races to honor his memory, and we also eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) on this day.
The dragon boat is shaped like a dragon and is usually manned by 22 people. A drummer sits at the front of the boat to give commands and help everyone paddle together in unison.
The special food of the Dragon Boat Festival is zongzi—made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves. The fillings can be red dates, red beans, meat, or salted egg yolk.
Other traditional customs include:
Hanging mugwort on doors, wearing scented sachets around the neck, and standing eggs upright at noon. These practices are believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck.
⸻
Craft Activity: Making Zongzi (Rice Dumpling) Crafts
Materials needed: green construction paper, scissors, double-sided tape, pipe cleaners, red dates, and mint leaves.
First, cut the green paper into a rectangle. Apply double-sided tape to the left, right, and top edges. Peel off the tape backing and form the paper into a bucket shape. Fold the bottom edge and place the red dates and mint leaves inside. Then tape the top shut by bringing two opposite corners together at a 90-degree angle. Once it’s sealed, wrap a pipe cleaner around the zongzi to finish. And just like that, the zongzi craft is complete!
⸻
Homework:
I hope the children can try making real zongzi at home with their parents!
