Theme: Mid-Autumn Festival
As the Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, today’s lesson was all about learning and celebrating this traditional festival.
At the beginning, I engaged the children with some interactive questions:
• When is the Mid-Autumn Festival?
• What do we eat during the Mid-Autumn Festival?
• Why do we eat mooncakes?
• How many different flavors of mooncakes are there?
• What is the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival?
Through their answers and discussion, the children gradually built up an initial understanding of the festival.
Next, we explored the legend behind the Mid-Autumn Festival. I asked the children a few more questions:
• Who is Chang’e?
• Who is her companion?
• Where does she live?
With these questions in mind, we learned the story of “Chang’e Flying to the Moon.” The story tells that in order to protect her husband Hou Yi’s elixir of immortality from being stolen by greedy people, Chang’e had no choice but to swallow it herself. Unexpectedly, she floated up into the sky and has since lived in the Moon Palace, forever separated from her husband, with only the Jade Rabbit as her companion. The children listened with great interest.

After the story, I also introduced how other Asian countries celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. Besides China, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Vietnam also have similar celebrations. Apart from moon gazing and eating mooncakes, people also write wishes and release sky lanterns to send their blessings into the night sky.
⸻
Craft Time
Since Chang’e has a lovely rabbit in the Moon Palace, today’s craft activity was to decorate our very own rabbit.
Materials:
Scissors, glue, pom-poms, feathers, colored paper, napkins, cardstock, colored markers.
Instructions:
First, draw the outline of a rabbit on the cardstock. Then use the provided materials to decorate the drawing and create a unique and imaginative rabbit artwork.
The children concentrated deeply during the activity, showing great creativity and making the classroom lively and joyful.
⸻
Homework
I encouraged the children to remember the story of “Chang’e Flying to the Moon” while celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with their families. As they enjoy the full moon and eat mooncakes together, I hope they will also experience the meaning of reunion and remembrance.
