Today’s Lesson
In today’s class, we first reviewed the 12 Chinese zodiac animals that we had learned before. I showed the children riddles for all 12 animals. I started by giving them hints, for example:

“Lives in its owner’s home, loves to wag its tail. Always barks “woof woof,” thieves are most afraid of it.”
Answer: Dog

This game was very well received and enjoyed by the children.

After learning about so many animals, I thought of how many Chinese idioms use animal stories as metaphors. These idioms vividly and creatively describe their meanings. In this lesson, I introduced four idioms: “The Frog at the Bottom of the Well,” “Waiting for a Rabbit by the Tree Stump,” “The Fox Borrows the Tiger’s Might,” and “Drawing Legs on a Snake.”

1. The Frog at the Bottom of the Well

Once upon a time, there was a frog living at the bottom of a well.
When it looked up, it could only see a small patch of sky.
So it thought the sky was really that small.

One day, another sea turtle told it that the world outside was very big.
Finally, the frog realized how small its own world really was.

Moral:
We should open our minds to learn new things instead of thinking that our limited knowledge is everything.

2. Waiting for a Rabbit by the Tree Stump

One day, a farmer saw a rabbit run into a tree stump and die.
He was very happy and took the rabbit home.

From that day on, the farmer stopped working.
He stayed by the tree stump every day, waiting for another rabbit to come.
But no rabbit ever appeared again.

Moral:
You cannot rely on luck alone.
You must work hard yourself.

3. The Fox Borrows the Tiger’s Might

A fox was caught by a tiger.
The fox said to the tiger, “I am the king of all animals; all animals are afraid of me.”
The tiger did not believe it.

Then the fox walked ahead while the tiger followed behind.
When the other animals saw the tiger, they all ran away in fear.
The tiger thought they were scared of the fox.

Moral:
The fox itself is not strong;
it only scares others by relying on the tiger’s power.

4. Drawing Legs on a Snake

A long time ago, some people received a pot of wine.
There wasn’t enough for everyone to drink together, so they decided to play a game.

They said, “Let’s draw a snake. Whoever finishes first can drink the wine.”

Everyone started drawing. One person drew very quickly and finished first. He felt very proud.

He said, “I’m the fastest! I still have time, I’ll add legs to my snake.”
So he drew legs on the snake.

Just then, another person finished.
He said, “Snakes don’t have legs. You lost!”

The first person could not drink the wine in the end.

Moral:
This teaches us to do things appropriately and not to do extra unnecessary actions, or it may backfire.

DIY Time

Today I let the children use paper plates to draw an animal.
They could use their imagination to draw a zodiac animal or any other animal.

Materials: Paper plates, colored pens

Homework

I hope parents can continue practicing the song “Gong Xi Fa Cai” with their children, helping them memorize both the lyrics and the actions.
