Course Review: Chinese Tableware and Dining Etiquette

In this lesson, we learned about Chinese tableware and dining etiquette. The children got to know the common utensils used in Chinese meals and also learned many fun table manners.

First, we learned about the most important tool in Chinese dining—chopsticks. The teacher explained that we say “a pair of chopsticks” because chopsticks come in two pieces, just like “a pair of shoes.” We also learned that we say “a spoon” and “a bowl.” Everyone practiced saying: “I have a pair of chopsticks, a bowl, and a spoon.” The children did a great job!

Next, we learned how to eat properly. In China, people often hold the bowl up closer to their mouth when eating, which makes it easier to eat. The teacher also showed everyone how to use chopsticks to pick up food and how to use a spoon to drink soup. We should not use chopsticks to drink soup! The children also joined in a fun “ball picking challenge” using chopsticks. Everyone had a great time and discovered that using chopsticks can be very interesting.

In the etiquette part, the children learned many important dining rules. For example, we should not stick chopsticks upright into rice because it is considered impolite. We should not point at people with chopsticks because it may make others feel uncomfortable. We should not tap the bowl because we should stay quiet while eating. We also should not dig through the dishes looking for our favorite food. Instead, we should take the food in front of us. Everyone understood that being polite at the table is very important.

We also learned about “who eats first.” In China, we should wait for grandparents, elders, or guests to start eating first. This shows respect for others. The children learned that being polite and caring for others makes us good children.

Finally, we learned about the Chinese round dining table. A round table means reunion and family togetherness. Everyone sits around the table and shares food happily. In the center of the table, there is often a rotating glass tray so everyone can easily reach the dishes. However, we should never turn the tray while someone is taking food, because that is considered very rude.

Through this lesson, the children not only learned new words like chopsticks, spoon, and bowl, but also understood many important Chinese dining manners. We hope everyone can become a polite child who knows how to share, respect others, and behave well at the dining table!

Handmade Butterfly Craft

Materials Needed

Paper plate, scissors, colored markers, and glue.

Steps

First, prepare a round paper plate and fold it in half to make a semicircle. Next, following the shape of butterfly wings, cut a curved opening on one side of the folded paper plate. Make sure the upper wings are a little bigger and the lower wings are a little smaller. After cutting, open the paper plate and separate it along the fold line to create a beautiful pair of butterfly wings.

Then, use colored markers to draw different beautiful patterns on the wings, such as wavy lines, dots, stripes, and small decorative designs, making the butterfly brighter and more colorful.

Homework:

Children can try using chopsticks while eating at home.
